The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm is the first cultivation guide of its kind, and presents invaluable information for growers interested in producing high-quality efficacious herbs in all climates of the United States, with the historical connectedness of ancient practitioners.
It has become increasingly important - especially as the market for herbal medicine continues to grow - that we transition to local and domestic medicinal cultivation. Increasingly there are concerns in regard to not only the quality but the purity of imported herbs, and wild herbs picked for medicinal purposes are ever more endangered than in past years both at home and abroad.
Peg Schafer, longtime grower and teacher, guides readers with information on propagating, cultivating, and harvesting Chinese herbs, and presents fascinating new scientific data that reveal the age-old wisdom of nature and the traditional systems of Chinese medicine. Through seventy-nine detailed herb profiles - all tested and trialed on Schafer's certified organic farm - Schafer offers easy-to-follow information, suitable for both growers and practitioners, for growing efficacious wild-simulated herbs. Also included is important information on species conservation, crop integration, and how to avoid the introduction of invasive species. Sidebars on traditional medicinal uses for each herb and delicious recipes are also featured throughout.
Vegetable and CSA farmers will find this book of great interest for adding value-added crops to their repertoire, and beginner growers looking to incorporate medicinals into their gardens will find this an invaluable guide to understanding where herbal medicine comes from. The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm will make eating-your-medicine more accessible than ever.
Conservation
The effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine has led to a world-wide explosion of interest in Chinese herbs. While this is a gift to humanity, most of the herbs used are still wild collected; substitutions are becoming common, and quality is in question. The only way that Chinese herbal medicine will be able to continue into the future is through the development of sustainable harvesting practices and cultivation wild-quality herbs throughout the world. We cultivate to conserve wild stands. Together we can protect these diminishing resources.
Thank you for purchasing Fu Tian Herb extracts and being part of the worldwide movement to preserve and sustainably use Chinese herbal medicine.
Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm
The CMHF, which is located in Northern California, has been USDA Certified Organic through Marin Organic Certified Agriculture (MOCA) since 2002. This yearly inspection and certification assures that all herbs produced are grown and handled to a high standard. Database crop records are carefully maintained, water and soil tests continue to show that standards are well within quality guidelines of the USDA National Organic Program Standards (NOPS). Only approved input materials are used in growing and processing. Sulfur, GMOs or irradiation is never used. The farm, processing, drying and storage facilities are inspected yearly by the USDA third party certifier Marin Organic Certified Agriculture. The CMHF protects the earth and our workers by growing herbs organically and by offering sustainable labor practices.
Growing wild quality medicine means growing in balance with nature. Stresses of insect, animals, and water distribution are part of the present natural pressures. Insectaries are maintained as well as owl boxes and hedgerow habitat; only approved pest control methods are employed. Along with dormant season cover cropping and interplanting (polyculture), low inputs and harvesting herbs at their proper age and season all contribute towards efficacious herbs. The herbs that are harvested yield bio-activities of major active constituents many times higher than compared to the same herbs currently on the market. The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm has been growing and assessing Chinese herbs since 1997 to fulfill the goal of growing the highest quality herbs with the best medicinal value possible. Harvesting of all herbs is done by hand ensuring a superior product. Aromatic herbs still carry their distinct scents; colors are vibrant and vital qi is present in these fresh dried herbs. Years have been spent evaluating the herbs to ensure quality and effectiveness.
In addition to growing, drying and processing, and selling Asian medicinal herbs, the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm also operates as an educational facility for practitioners, herb students, farmers and nursery growers. A year-long farming program as well as workshops and lectures address the many factors of growing quality efficacious Asian botanicals.
